The Perfect Divorce is the sequel to The Perfect Marriage, a book by Jeneva Rose published in 2020. Just like the first book, I rated this 3.75 stars.
This book features four points of view: Sarah Morgan (our main character), Bob Miller (her husband), Sheriff Hudson (the prime investigator), and an unknown (who ends up being Stacy Howard). Having these different points of view was extremely interesting. I felt that they, for the most part, added something useful to the progression of the novel. There were many times when it was fun to know Bob and Sarah’s inner thoughts, knowing their intentions the entire time. Seeing their true colors from the very beginning.
But there were also a lot of times where the storyline felt familiar to the first book, predictable in a sense that knowing how things were going to play out caused a lack of suspense. Although I enjoyed the book overall, there were many times I found myself bored and skimming lines entirely. For example, the scenes where they were debriefing the cases at the station felt like everything from the previous chapters was just being recapped. It felt bland.
My interest piqued when Bob ordered the hit on Sarah because 1) it felt like some action was finally happening, and 2) Sarah irks me. How has she gotten away with all of it? Not one person thought to look into her as a suspect? First husband? Dead. Second husband? Dead. Her daughter is clearly named after her first husband's mistress. Is that not strange to them? I seriously can’t believe she got away with all these murders.
Speaking of the first husband’s mistress, Kelly Summers, I feel so bad for her. Not only was she murdered for her involvement with Adam, but she was also set up by Bob for the murder of her ex-husband.
That was one of my favorite twists. My other favorite twist: Alejandro being an unreformed criminal hitman who Bob secretly hired while plotting against Sarah. Alejandro and Sarah getting together after they both tried to kill each other was not something I expected, but it was cute…in a creepy, dark romance kind of way, I guess?
But again, I don’t like that Sarah was able to get away with so much. There were only two things that were redeemable for her: her love for her daughter and what she did for Carissa. She genuinely loved Summer and wanted her to have a relationship with Bob, regardless of what they were going through. Her helping Carissa was not very "on brand" since she didn’t get any recognition for it, but it showed a more genuine side to her. These things gave Sarah’s character depth and complexity, which I appreciated.
Overall, the book was good, but there were more than a few parts where I was waiting for the conclusion to hit. Would I recommend it? Yes, if you’ve read the first book and are looking for some loose ends wrapped up. I gave this book a 3.75/5 stars on Goodreads: Goodreads- Jayla Wilson.
