Book: In the Likely Event

Author: Rebecca Yarros

Publisher: Montlake (2023)

Overall Rating: 4/5

In In the Likely Event, we follow two main characters, Izzy and Nate. This book is a dual POV - there are chapters written from Izzy’s point of view and there are some that are written from Nate’s point of view. The chapters also go back and forth between past and present times, showing the progression of their dating life from the moment they met to the current time when they are in Afghanistan together.

This military romance has a ton of common tropes. The three most prominent are grumpy x sunshine, soulmates, and second chance romance (SCR). Personally, SCR is my top trope, followed by grumpy x sunshine, so this book was right up my alley. What I liked a lot about this book is that the tropes are executed very well, making the characters relatable. Both Nate and Izzy were likable even with their faults. It felt like most - not every, trust me when I tell you - decisions they made were very realistic and based on natural human emotions which is something I can appreciate when it comes to a romance novel.

Not everything was sappy, not everything was simple, and not everything was expected. Both Nate and Izzy have their own things they need to work through and Yarros portrays how those things affect their relationship. Izzy is patient and the peace that Nate desperately needs in his life. She holds on to the love she has for him even when he has a difficult time showing consistency. Nate battles with the promises he made to himself as a teenager as well as the feeling of being unworthy. I will end with this, there is a twist at the end of this one that I both loved and hated but made the book that much more interesting.

Overall, I gave this book a 4/5 stars on Goodreads: Goodreads- Jayla Wilson. Would I recommend it? If you’re looking for a quick romance that’s jampacked with drama, then yes!
